Part 1: At my sister’s engagement party, my own mother shoved her “single mother” daughter and her so-called “illegitimate” granddaughter right off the yacht deck into the icy harbor below.

Part 1 of 2

“Your sister married a powerful tycoon, unlike you, who only brings shame to our name,” Meredith sneered while looking down her nose at me. My father, Richard, barked at me to know my place while the hundred wealthy guests began to laugh or even clap at my humiliation.

But their laughter did not last very long, and the arrogance they wore like expensive perfume was about to evaporate.

Two minutes later, the evening sky thundered with the sound of approaching helicopters, and everything they thought they controlled began to unravel in an instant. The horizon stretched across the harbor of Port Saint-Cloud in shades of deep purple and fading gold, which cast a surreal glow over the polished yachts docked along the pier.

We were currently aboard the Azure Pearl, a massive luxury vessel that had been rented specifically for my younger sister Olivia’s engagement celebration. The upper deck sparkled with the kind of elegance that only old money can buy, and live classical music drifted through the salty air as servers in white gloves carried trays of imported delicacies.

It was exactly the kind of world my family had spent decades trying to belong to, and they were finally feeling like they had reached the pinnacle of society. And yet, despite being related to them by blood, I was clearly not considered a part of this grand celebration.

I sat far below the main festivities near the back of the yacht, where I was tucked away beside a stack of supply crates and spare linens. The hum of the heavy engine vibrated through the floorboards beneath my feet, and it served to drown out the lively music playing just a few feet above our heads.

Next to me sat my five year old daughter, Sophie, who was quietly doodling on a paper napkin with a pen she had found on the floor. No one had bothered to prepare a seat for her at the main table upstairs, and they certainly had not made any space for me either.

I adjusted the sleeve of my simple black dress, which was plain and unremarkable compared to the designer gowns being paraded on the deck. I did not mind the exclusion for my own sake, but seeing Sophie treated like a ghost in her own family’s presence made my heart ache with a dull, heavy pain.

To my parents and my sister, I was nothing more than a failure and a cautionary tale that they whispered about behind their manicured hands. Years ago, I had walked away from a prestigious career path after I discovered I was pregnant, and I had steadfastly refused to name the man who was the father.

They all assumed I had been abandoned by a stranger, and they believed I had ruined my entire future for a single, foolish mistake. They were completely wrong about the situation, but the truth was something I could never risk exposing to people as power-hungry as my own relatives.

The sharp and suffocating scent of expensive perfume suddenly cut through the salt air, and I looked up to see my mother standing before us. Meredith’s expression was carved from cold judgment, and she did not even bother to acknowledge Sophie’s presence as she looked down at me.

“Honestly, Alexandra, you could not even bother to present yourself properly for such an important night,” she muttered while scanning my outfit from head to toe with visible disgust. She told me that I looked like I belonged with the cleaning crew rather than among the elite guests of Port Saint-Cloud.

I exhaled slowly to steady my nerves because I did not want to cause a scene in front of my daughter. “I had to take care of Sophie, and this dress is perfectly fine for sitting in the back of a boat,” I replied as calmly as I could manage.

“Olivia is marrying a man of immense influence tonight, and she is finally bringing this family the respect we deserve,” Meredith continued while her voice tightened with a twisted sense of pride. She told me that I was nothing but a burden and a constant reminder of poor decisions, so I needed to stay down there and keep the child out of sight.

She turned on her heel and walked away before I could even think of a response, leaving me alone with my thoughts and my shivering daughter. I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone, and my fingers trembled slightly as I opened a secure messaging app that few people in the world even knew existed.

I typed a message to Marcus asking how much longer it would be, because I did not know how much more of this toxic environment I could endure. The message sent instantly through an encrypted satellite connection, and I knew that he would receive it no matter where he was in the world.

I just needed to hold on for a few more minutes, but then the fragile peace we had found in the shadows was shattered by a single accident. Sophie stood up suddenly because she spotted a dropped silver spoon near the stairs, and being a helpful child, she rushed forward to pick it up.

At that exact moment, my sister’s fiancé, Sebastian, was descending the steps while proudly showing off a rare luxury watch to a group of potential investors. Sophie accidentally bumped into his leg as she reached for the spoon, and the sudden impact caused him to lose his grip on the precious timepiece.

Time seemed to freeze as the watch tumbled through the air, hit the wooden deck with a sickening crack, and then vanished through the railing into the dark water below. A heavy silence fell over the surrounding area for a heartbeat before Sebastian’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage.

“My watch!” Sebastian shouted with a voice that actually cracked with anger and disbelief. He spun toward my young daughter with his fists clenched, and he called her a little idiot before screaming that the watch was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I rushed forward immediately and pulled Sophie behind my back to protect her from his outburst. “I am so incredibly sorry, Sebastian, but she is just a child and she did not mean to do it,” I said while trying to keep my voice steady despite my racing heart.

“Get them out of here right now!” Olivia snapped as she stormed down the stairs with her eyes blazing like fire. She shouted that she knew I would find a way to ruin her special night, and she accused me of destroying everything she had worked for.
