PART 2
I walked straight past the guests into the kitchen without greeting a single person in the room. I immediately took the heavy platter away from Olivia’s trembling hands and picked her up into my arms.
When her tiny arms wrapped tightly around my neck, I felt her icy, wrinkled, and slippery fingers covered in soapy detergent.
“Dad, my hands hurt really bad,” she whispered softly into my ear, “but please don’t tell Grandma because she will get extremely mad at Mom.”
I felt something fundamental break inside my chest at her words.
“Go straight to your room right now, princess, close the door tightly, and do not come out until I come call for you,” I instructed gently.
Olivia obeyed immediately and hurried down the hall. I turned and took Jessica’s hands into mine, though she tried desperately to hide them behind her back.
“Zayden, please don’t make a big problem out of this,” Jessica pleaded softly.
That single sentence hurt me far more than any insult could have. I pulled off her thick rubber gloves, revealing hands that were cracked, raw, deeply cut, and swollen, with ruined nails and several fresh burn marks lining her forearms.
I turned around to face the crowded living room.
“This meeting is officially over, and everyone has exactly five minutes to leave my house,” I announced firmly.
Nobody moved an inch at first. A woman with short curly hair let out a dismissive giggle.
“Oh, son, don’t exaggerate like that, your mother is just teaching them proper household discipline,” she said.
“I am not your son, and this is not my mother’s apartment, as it belongs entirely to Jessica and me, so get out right now,” I shouted.
Carmen slammed her fist violently against the wooden table.
“I am your mother, and are you really going to humiliate me publicly for that useless woman?” she screamed.
“No, you are humiliating yourself,” I replied coldly.
My mother’s entire expression twisted in rage.
“That useless woman has completely turned you against your own mother,” she shrieked.
In a fit of rage, she grabbed a heavy pot full of boiling meat broth that had just come out of the kitchen and hurled it straight at Jessica’s face. I didn’t hesitate for a single second and stepped directly in front of my wife.
The scalding hot liquid splashed violently over my right shoulder, my chest, and my neck, making Jessica scream in absolute horror. The silence that followed in the room was completely brutal, and my mother instantly dropped the heavy pot onto the floor.
I stared straight at her, and for the very first time in my life, I didn’t see the woman who had raised me, but rather someone fully capable of hurting my family without a shred of remorse.
“Get out,” I ordered sternly, “all of you leave immediately.”
The terrified guests began frantically grabbing their purses and coats, emptying the apartment entirely in less than three minutes. Carmen started sobbing loudly, beating her chest dramatically while repeating that I was a terrible son, but I ignored her completely and dialed 911.
When the emergency paramedics and two police officers arrived shortly after, Jessica was still visibly trembling in the living room. One of the paramedics gently asked her to roll up her sleeves so he could check her injuries.
She hesitated nervously before looking at me.
“Show them everything,” I told her softly, “you don’t have to protect anyone in this house anymore.”
Jessica slowly rolled up her long sleeves, exposing a painful mixture of old scars and raw, fresh burn marks spanning her arms. The paramedic pointed directly to a deep, terrible burn mark situated near her left wrist.
“How exactly did this injury happen?” the paramedic asked with a frown.
Jessica glanced briefly at my terrified mother before speaking up.
“It happened early this morning when she asked me to test if the stove pot was hot enough, and when I reached for a spoon, she grabbed my bare wrist and forced it against the hot metal edge, telling me that was how I would learn to do things right,” Jessica explained quietly.
One of the police officers stopped writing mid-sentence and looked up, while a wave of deep nausea hit my stomach.
Right at that moment, the bedroom door opened softly. Olivia came out barefoot and ran quickly over to where I was standing.
“Dad,” she whispered loudly, “tell the officer to check Grandma’s locked drawer in her bedroom too.”
Carmen jerked her head up instantly.
“What drawer are you talking about?” my mother snapped angrily.
My daughter looked up at me with eyes completely filled with fear.
“The drawer she always keeps locked, because she keeps Mom’s scary videos in there and says that if you ever watch them, you will kick both of us out onto the street forever,” Olivia said.
