PART 2
Early the next morning, Gavin called my phone just like he did every single day.
“Good morning to my beautiful future bride,” he said, his tone dripping with fake affection.
I had to clench my fists tightly to suppress the overwhelming urge to vomit right then and there.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” I replied, forcing my voice to sound light and sweet.
I even brought up his family politely, asking, “How is Brianna doing today?”
Gavin answered without a second of hesitation.
“Oh, she has suffered from severe mental health issues for years, but my parents do everything they can to care for her,” he lied seamlessly.
He lied with such terrifying ease that it chilled me to the bone.
The moment I hung up the phone, I immediately dialed Warren Burchett, a brilliant senior corporate attorney who had handled my agency’s legal affairs for years.
I instructed him to conduct a quiet, deeply thorough investigation into the Herndon family, Elijah, Gavin, and especially Brianna’s background.
Forty-eight hours later, Warren called me into his office with alarming news.
The vast wealth of the Herndon family was nothing more than an elaborate, fragile facade.
Their core investment holding company was drowning in defaulted bank loans, their grand estate was double-mortgaged, and millions of dollars were tied up in failed offshore real estate schemes. On top of that, Elijah had accumulated astronomical gambling debts at private casinos across the country.
However, Brianna’s personal story was far more heartbreaking.
Before marrying Gavin’s older brother, Damian, Brianna was the daughter of a successful textile factory owner based in Macon.
Her family had operated a highly profitable manufacturing business for generations.
Shortly after their marriage, Damian convinced Brianna’s aging father to stand as a guarantor for several massive loans taken out by the Herndon business group.
The debt grew larger every month.
Eventually, the pressure broke the textile company, forcing it into complete liquidation.
Brianna’s father suffered a massive stroke from the stress, leaving him bedridden in an expensive care facility.
Damian conveniently fled the country three years later to avoid federal fraud charges, leaving Brianna completely trapped.
The Herndon family kept all of her legal documents locked in their home safe and paid just enough toward her father’s medical facility to keep him alive, using his care as collateral to threaten her every time she tried to run away.
I finally understood why Brianna had endured years of horrific physical abuse without calling the police.
I also saw the exact trap they were laying for me.
My agency generated steady cash flow, held clean books, and owned three commercial office spaces in downtown Atlanta.
I was the exact golden goose they needed to secure fresh bank credit and keep their sinking empire afloat.
A week later, Gavin and Naomi invited me to an expensive dinner at a high-end steakhouse.
Naomi brought up the topic right before our dessert arrived.
“We really think it would be best to move the wedding date up to next month,” Naomi said with a glowing smile. “You are already family to us, Alyssa.”
Gavin reached across the table and held my hand gently.
“And we can merge your agency directly into our corporate umbrella right after,” Gavin added smoothly. “It would make managing our collective assets so much easier, and you won’t have to stress over financial details anymore.”
There it was.
The exact same financial trap they had sprung on Brianna’s father years ago.
I looked Gavin straight in the eyes and offered him a brilliant smile.
“That sounds wonderful, let’s draft the administration agreement so we can sign it on our wedding day,” I said.
Gavin’s eyes lit up with unconcealed greed.
He truly believed he had won the long game.
What he didn’t realize was that Warren and my legal team were already scrutinizing every single paper they drafted.
Two days later, I managed to sneak onto the Herndon property while Naomi was away at her weekly garden club meeting.
When Brianna saw me enter through the service door, she gasped in pure panic.
“Alyssa, are you insane? If Gavin or Elijah catches you here, they will destroy you!” she cried out.
“I was standing outside the cellar window that night, Brianna, I saw everything,” I said quietly.
I laid out everything Warren had discovered regarding her father’s coerced loan guarantees and the real state of the Herndon family’s finances.
Brianna broke down crying, her body shaking with sob after sob.
“They stripped my life away piece by piece,” she whispered softly. “Damian used me until the money ran out, and then his mother told me my father would be thrown onto the street if I ever said a word.”
I took both of her bruised hands into mine.
“I am not going to marry Gavin, Brianna,” I told her firmly.
Brianna looked up at me in utter confusion.
“Then you need to pack your things and run as far away as you can,” she begged.
“No, running away won’t fix this,” I answered, pulling a pre-paid burner phone from my purse and slipping it into her hands. “I am going to pretend the wedding is fully on, and you are going to help me gather concrete evidence from inside this house. When this is over, I promise I will get your father out of their reach forever.”
For the first time since I had met her, the fearful fog in Brianna’s eyes cleared, replaced by a spark of burning rage.
Over the next three weeks, Brianna quietly photographed stack after stack of hidden financial ledgers, illegal promissory notes, and fraudulent bank records she discovered while cleaning Elijah’s private study. She transferred every single file to Warren’s secured cloud server.
She also managed to record clear audio of Naomi threatening her and screaming about their plans to strip my agency of its assets.
The final piece fell into place on a Sunday afternoon.
Brianna found a locked metal box inside Elijah’s office safe containing original contracts proving the Herndons had deliberately bankrupted her father’s company alongside wire transfer receipts linking Elijah to active money laundering schemes.
That exact night, Warren delivered certified legal copies of every document along with audio files directly to state prosecutors and federal financial crime investigators.
Everything was set in stone.
Or so I thought.
Just three days before the wedding ceremony, Gavin showed up at my apartment late at night without calling first.
His eyes were bloodshot, and his suit was disheveled.
“Alyssa, I need you to sign the corporate merger papers right now,” he demanded, pacing back and forth across my living room floor.
“Right now? But our wedding is in three days,” I said calmly.
“The commercial bank is threatening to freeze our credit line tomorrow morning if I don’t provide extra asset guarantees tonight,” Gavin snapped, his calm mask slipping away entirely.
When I casually mentioned that my board of directors still needed to review the final draft, his demeanor flipped instantly.
He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist with incredible force and squeezing until pain shot up my arm.
For three horrifying seconds, the sweet, gentle man I thought I loved vanished completely, revealing the violent predator underneath.
Then, realizing what he had done, he suddenly let go of my arm and took a step back.
“I am so sorry, Alyssa, please forgive me, I am just completely overwhelmed with wedding stress,” he stammered out, backing toward the door.
He turned and left quickly.
I looked down at the dark red welt forming on my skin.
I smiled a bitter smile.
Gavin had just handed me the final piece of physical evidence I needed.
The wedding was going forward.
There would be three hundred high-profile guests in attendance.
Prominent executives, wealthy socialites, media reporters, and community leaders in front of whom the Herndon family had built their pristine reputation over the past thirty years.
They genuinely believed they were going to legally consume my business that day.
They had no idea that I had arranged a very different grand reveal for the moment Gavin said his vows.
And once the show started, no power on earth was going to stop it.
